In an improved performance over the last match against Tampines Rovers, the White Swans fought a 1-1 stalemate with title-chasing Hougang Utd at Jalan Besar Stadium this evening.
In the 20th minute, midfield maestro, Kyoga Nakamura, fresh from his Sultan of Selangor exploits, chip a delicious ball into the penalty area for right winger Daizo Horikoshi. Horikoshi was tackled but the loose ball fell to left back, Souta Sugiyama, who swept the ball home. The White Swans drew first blood.
The White Swans were sharp in this match with an attacking 4-1-4-1 formation. However, the attacking display was susceptible to counter attacks as the Cheetahs have fast wingers such as national team no. 10 Faris Ramli, 16-year old sensation, Farhan Zulkifli and right back Nazrul Nazari.
At the 40th minute, a long ball to Faris Ramli caught out centre back Shuhei Sasahara. Faris took the ball around him and evaded the tackle from 2 other defenders before putting the ball into the net beyond the despairing reach of Kengo Fukudome. 1-1, both teams took a goal each into half time.
Both teams were eager to win the game as the march towards the title heats up with less than 5 games left. However, the defence held firm and neither team could find a breakthrough.
The final score remained at 1-1. Hougang Utd took the point to move into 1st place in the table while the White Swans remain in 4th place.
The White Swans will next play Warriors FC this Saturday, 31 Aug at Jurong East Stadium. Kickoff is at 5.30pm
