【Match Report】SPL 13th Leg "Set Pieces Set White Swans to Top Again"

Team2020/12/3

In a Jurong East Stadium Derby, the White Swans defeated neighbours Tanjong Pagar Utd 3 nil this evening with a penalty and 2 corners to return to the top of the table again. Previous leaders Tampines could only manage a 1-1 draw with 3rd-placed Lion City Sailors at Bishan Stadium to surrender the lead back to the White Swans.

The White Swans suffered a devastating 1-4 loss to Tampines last Sunday. It seemed that they had a hangover from that result as the team were disjointed during the first half. There were many misplaced passes and the only notable shot was from attacking midfielder Ryoya Taniguchi's shot from the edge of the area which brought out a good save from Fashah Iskandar, Tanjong Pagar's goalkeeper.

However, at the start of the second half, substitute Reo Nishiguchi, who replaced the ineffective Iman Hakim, flicked on a header to striker Tomoyuki Doi, who was upended by Fashah in the penalty box. Referee Md,. Zulfiqar pointed to the penalty spot immediately despite furious protests from the Jaguars. Doi picked himself up and sent Fashah the wrong way to give the White Swans a deserved lead.

The White Swans went in search of a second goal to kill the game. However the huffing and puffing did not bring much success until the 14th corner in the 89th minute, when Centreback Kotaro Takeda headed the ball onto the crossbar and bounced into the net. The 15th corner in the 2nd minute of additional time saw Doi heading in his second goal for the night, and the third goal for the White Swans.

The White Swans lead Tampines by 1 point and 1 goal difference going into the last match of the season this Saturday. The White Swans will visit Hougang Utd at Hougang Stadium, while Tampines will meet Geylang in a Eastern Derby at Tampines Hub. Both games kick off at 5.30pm.
