[Match Report] Albirex Edge a Tight Contest to Secure a Fourth Straight League Win

In Matchweek 8 of the Singapore Premier League, Albirex Niigata FC (S), who had been building momentum with consecutive wins since the start of 2026 and were aiming for a fourth straight victory, welcomed Hougang United FC to their home ground. The two sides had played out a draw in last season’s cup competition.
The match began with both teams looking to establish control and dictate the tempo.
In the 5th minute, Albirex were threatened by a counter-attack from the visitors, but the defensive unit stood firm and dealt with the danger through committed defending.
Hougang continued to create a few opportunities, but Albirex’s disciplined and focused defending ensured that no goal was conceded.

In the 7th minute, Albirex also fashioned a chance through a well-weighted through pass, though they were unable to convert it into a shot, as the early stages saw an evenly contested battle.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 13th minute.
Cho Eunsu delivered a free kick from distance, and Shingo Nakano rose to head home the loose ball, giving Albirex the opening goal of the match.

After taking the lead, Albirex gradually gained control of the game and increased the frequency of their attacking moves.
In the 39th minute, a sharp cross from Yang Hyeonju was met by Nakano with a header, but his effort was denied by an excellent save from the opposition goalkeeper.
Then, in the 43rd minute, Yang Hyeonju received the ball near the edge of the penalty area and combined neatly with Nakano before skipping past a defender and calmly finishing into the bottom right corner. The promising new signing, making his first start of the season, made his mark with a crucial goal.

The first half ended with Albirex holding a 2-0 lead.
Early in the second half, Albirex were caught out momentarily and conceded a goal to the visitors.
However, in the 53rd minute, a well-worked move between Nakano and Yang Hyeonju led to a shot on goal, as Albirex looked to regain control of the match.
From the 60th minute onwards, the tempo of the game slowed, with both sides locked in a closely contested battle.

In the closing stages, Hougang created a clear chance, but goalkeeper Hassan Sunny remained composed and dealt with the situation confidently, ensuring Albirex protected their lead until the final whistle.
The match finished 2-1. By edging a closely fought contest, Albirex secured their fourth consecutive league victory.
Up next is a crucial top-of-the-table clash, as Albirex face Tampines Rovers FC, who currently sit second in the league.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
